The introduction of Amazon-owned Ring’s Neighbours community app in the UK is set to reshape how residents engage with local safety issues and community events. Launching on October 21, the app will provide a platform for sharing safety updates, community information, and reports about lost pets, all without requiring ownership of a Ring device.
This move comes amid ongoing privacy discussions, particularly in the US, where Ring’s partnerships with law enforcement have raised concerns. In the UK, however, the app will initially exclude some features from its US counterpart, such as allowing organizations like fire departments to post alerts or police to request camera footage. These features may be introduced later, depending on the initial reception and privacy considerations.
Users of the new app can tailor their experience by setting their address and defining a community radius ranging from 0.1 to five miles. Posts will be categorized and filtered through both AI and human moderation to ensure compliance with guidelines that prohibit illegal content, discrimination, and speculative posts.
Adding a unique touch, the app will also include a feature called Search Party for Dogs, enabling users to report missing pets with detailed descriptions and photos. Ring camera owners who opt into an eligible cloud subscription can receive alerts if their cameras detect a missing pet, and they can choose whether to share footage with pet owners.
Amazon’s acquisition of Ring in 2018 marked its foray into smart-home security, a move that has not been without scrutiny. In response to privacy concerns, Ring recently introduced an encryption system called TAKE, which uses time-limited keys to protect recorded footage, ensuring that only users can extend access.
