This development promises to bolster the use of renewable energy by storing electricity generated from the conservancy’s existing solar photovoltaic system, ensuring power availability when needed.
The project involves the installation of a 1.15 MW battery energy storage system that will complement GTRLC’s current 185 kW solar array. This initiative not only optimizes the use of solar power but also represents a significant step toward sustainable energy solutions in Michigan. The storage system will employ Advanced Battery Concepts’ (ABC) GreenSeal® bipolar lead battery technology, known for using less lead than traditional lead batteries while maintaining safety and recyclability standards.
ABC, based in Michigan, highlights the project as a testament to the state’s role in the domestic energy storage supply chain. The technology will be housed in three BOX-BE™ energy storage enclosures and marks a significant advancement in energy storage solutions. The project is supported through Congressionally Directed Spending, managed by the Department of Energy, facilitating the transition towards more sustainable energy practices.
With federal approval secured, the project has now moved to the procurement and manufacturing phase. Installation and commissioning of the system are projected for the second quarter of 2027. This timeline underscores the commitment to enhancing energy infrastructure and resilience while leveraging local technological advancements.
