In a recent social media post, Trump described the U.S. support for NATO as “one-sided” and “not reciprocal,” expressing his discontent with what he perceives as an imbalanced relationship. He highlighted his concerns by noting that several NATO allies did not back the United States during its conflict with Iran, labeling the situation as “ridiculous” given Washington’s significant share of the alliance’s defense responsibilities.
President Trump has been a vocal advocate for European NATO members to increase their contributions towards their own security. His administration has already initiated measures to scale back certain U.S. defense commitments in Europe, reflecting his stance on reducing America’s disproportionate role within the alliance. The issue of defense burden-sharing is expected to be a central topic of discussion at the upcoming NATO summit.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has acknowledged the existing tensions within the alliance. Rubio mentioned that President Trump is particularly dissatisfied with the response of some NATO members to U.S. military operations in the Middle East. This dissatisfaction is anticipated to be a significant point of discussion among the leaders of NATO’s 32 member countries who are scheduled to convene in Ankara on July 7–8.
The summit will provide an opportunity for member countries to deliberate on defense cooperation, address security challenges, and outline future commitments. The discussions are likely to focus on how the alliance can achieve a more balanced distribution of responsibilities among its members, in line with President Trump’s ongoing calls for greater European involvement in their own defense.
