Sunset Center, a cherished cultural landmark in Carmel-by-the-Sea, is gearing up to commemorate a significant milestone with the centennial celebration of the Sunset School’s original campus building. This momentous event, scheduled for Sunday, October 25, 2026, will also kick off the center’s five-year Century of Creativity | 1926–2031 campaign, which will culminate in 2031, marking 100 years since the opening of its historic theater auditorium. The community is invited to this free event, promising an afternoon of artistic celebration from 1 to 4 p.m.

The anniversary festivities will offer a dynamic lineup of live performances, visual arts, historical exhibits, oral histories, campus tours, and family-friendly activities. Attendees can experience performances in the historic 718-seat theater and on the outdoor terrace between 1:30 and 3:30 p.m. Esteemed local cultural groups such as the Carmel Bach Festival, Monterey Symphony, and Carmel Music Society, alongside Chamber Music Monterey Bay, Youth Music Monterey, Carmel High School Chamber Singers, and Monterey Peninsula Ballet Theatre/TDC, will contribute to the day’s performances, showcasing their talents.

A highlight of the event will be the Sunset Legacy Wall, a community art project that encourages visitors to express their creativity by contributing artwork, memories, and messages reflecting Sunset Center’s community role. Families can also partake in activities like rock painting. Additional offerings will include live art demonstrations, music and photography programs, wellness activities, and guided tours of the historic property. An archival exhibition will chronicle the transformation of the campus from a school into a vibrant cultural hub.

Collaborating with local organizations, the event will feature the Carmel Heritage Society, Harrison Memorial Library, The Carmel Foundation, Carmel Youth Center, Carmel Residents Association, and Carmel Woman’s Club. Attendees will enjoy complimentary refreshments, with the option to purchase food and beverages from Sunset Center concessions. This five-year celebration aims to honor and spotlight Sunset Center’s rich history, its diverse cultural programming, and enduring ties to the Monterey Peninsula community.

The celebration is set to take place at Sunset Center, located at San Carlos Street at Ninth Avenue in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. The event is open to the public, providing free admission.
