President Donald Trump is poised to reveal a comprehensive initiative aimed at bolstering nuclear energy in the United States, which includes the provision of $17.5 billion in low-interest federal loans. These funds will facilitate the deployment of Westinghouse AP1000 nuclear reactors nationwide. The U.S. Department of Energy will administer the funding, which is intended to finance the acquisition of essential equipment for as many as 10 AP1000 reactors across five dual-reactor projects. This initiative is part of a larger effort to enhance domestic energy production and respond to the increasing electricity demand fueled by the growth of artificial intelligence data centers and industrial expansion.

Reports indicate that seven utility companies have signed letters of intent to participate in this program. The loans will primarily assist in the early bulk procurement of specialized reactor components, which is expected to stabilize supply chains and lower project costs. The Trump administration anticipates that this financing strategy could reduce construction timelines by up to three years. If the projects receive approval and are completed as planned, the new reactors are projected to commence commercial operations around 2035.

Part of a wider $80 billion nuclear expansion initiative, the project involves a collaboration between Westinghouse Electric Company, Cameco, and Brookfield Asset Management. Construction on approximately 10 new reactors is scheduled to begin in 2026. To prevent the cost overruns that plagued previous projects like the Vogtle Nuclear Plant in Georgia, Westinghouse intends to implement standardized reactor designs and fixed-price contracts. The expansion of the Vogtle plant saw its costs escalate from an initial estimate of $14 billion to over $30 billion before completion.

The focus of the project will be on Westinghouse’s AP1000 pressurized water reactors, as well as the AP300 small modular reactor design. AP1000 technology is already in operation at the Vogtle facility, which marked the introduction of the first new U.S. nuclear reactors in decades, coming online during 2023 and 2024. The administration regards nuclear power as a vital element of the nation’s future energy security, with nuclear energy currently accounting for approximately 20% of America’s electricity generation. The planned expansion aims to enhance reliable, carbon-free power generation while supporting economic growth and technological development.
