Trump’s comments prompted immediate reactions from both the UK government and leaders in Northern Ireland who favor maintaining the current political status. A spokesperson from Downing Street reiterated the UK government’s stance, highlighting that there is insufficient support for a referendum on Irish unification as per the Good Friday Agreement. Gavin Robinson, leader of the Democratic Unionist Party, emphasized that any decision regarding Northern Ireland’s constitutional status should be made by its residents, rather than by external political figures from London, Dublin, or Washington.
